painter / artist / pursued by creatures
Shooting Stars, Maia Shelley Rakovic, Mixed media on canvas, 70 × 50 cm
My practice is a skittish horse. The more time I spend with her, the less I remember how to speak like a human.
I see painting as a means to express impossible and inconceivable realities . My works are entirely medium-agnostic, incorporating oils, acrylics, alcohol, dirt, found objects, and anything else in my immediate vicinity. I am guided by mythology, intuition, materiality, and expression – my horse knows this road better than I do.
I hail from a land of displacement, feminised experience, queerness, and a hopelessly online adolescence. I am ironic and odd and I like to laugh. There are things I want to tell you, and I will tell you with my work.
I hope you’ll join me on this journey.
Maia Shelley Rakovic achieved a Distinction in the Grad Dip at the Royal College of Art and holds an MFA in Arts & Humanities from the RCA.
